PROMOTING INDEPENDENCE THROUGH HOME OWNERSHIP - WINTER '07

Specialized Housing has units available in supportive independent living for an adult with a learning or developmental or autism spectrum disability. Specialized Housing, since 1983, has been organizing and managing condominiums owned by the resident or owned by the family on his or her behalf. Residents and families have a significant role in the ongoing operations of the household. Some families consider this an investment in their child's future security and an opportunity to have some control over their own lives. Specialized Housing assesses the compatibility of the applicants and also assists in determining potential subsidies and sources of funds. The disabilities can fall within a broad range as long as the individual can manage with the level of staffing the program provides.

Generally a condominium unit consists of a private bedroom (sometimes with a private bath) and an undivided share of generous, well-appointed common areas-living rooms, kitchen, dining room, recreation area, staff apartments, laundries, etc.

Typical units that may be open:

ARLINGTON and BROOKLINE, MA: Several units in lovely fully renovated Victorian houses, established households in convenient neighborhoods.

CAMBRIDGE, MA: Units in a four bedroom apartment in Cambridge Cohousing, a 41-unit condominium community, collectively planned by the owners, who have chosen to be in "a group of people who believe in looking out for each other." Four adults with disabilities live as part of this group with staff support, sharing all of the privileges and responsibilities of the cohousing community. Rental subsidies available.

NEW UNITS: Specialized Housing works with groups of families to develop the housing of their choice.

APARTMENTS: Specialized Housing also supports people who live in apartments and need limited services. We provide on-site assistance and emergency on-call service. New apartments can be added at any time.

Please distribute or post this listing, and check our Website at specializedhousing.org. If you are interested in exploring the concept of home ownership for your family member, we hold informational meetings, give tours, etc. We present workshops and informational meetings.
